Why Prayer Still Matters in a Broken World

Everywhere we look, there are gaps.

Gaps in families.
Gaps in leadership.
Gaps in culture.
Gaps in the church.

And when we see everything happening around us, it’s easy to wonder if prayer actually makes
a difference anymore.

Does prayer still matter?
Can prayer really change anything?

In this message during First Saturday Prayer, we were reminded that prayer is not passive, and
it’s far more powerful than we often realize.

Prayer Is More Than Just Talking

Many people think of prayer as simply talking to God.

While prayer certainly includes conversation with Him, Scripture shows us that prayer is much
deeper than that.

Prayer is standing in the gap.

In Ezekiel 22:30, God says:

“I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on
behalf of the land…”

That picture matters.

A gap represents a broken place. A breach. A place where something is missing.

And God was looking for someone willing to step into that space.

Prayer Positions You Between Heaven and Earth

Prayer is not just words spoken into the air.

When we pray, we position ourselves between heaven and earth.

We stand between:
● Brokenness and healing
● Judgment and mercy
● Lost people and salvation

That’s why prayer is strategic.

Intercession literally means to step in between. Through prayer, we partner with God and ask
Him to move in places we cannot fix ourselves.

And throughout Scripture, we see this pattern again and again.

Moses stood between God and Israel.

Aaron stood between the living and the dead.
Jesus now stands as our mediator.

Prayer has always mattered.

The Gap Will Not Fix Itself

One of the most sobering parts of Ezekiel 22 is this:

God said He looked for someone, but found no one.

The issue was never that God was unwilling to move.

The issue was that nobody stepped up.

Sometimes we ask: “God, why aren’t You doing something”

Meanwhile, God is asking: “Who is willing to pray?”

Scripture reminds us: “You have not because you ask not.”

That means there are moments where God chooses to move through the prayers of His people.

Not because He needs us, but because He invites us into partnership with Him.

Every Believer is Called to Stand

Prayer is not reserved for pastors or “prayer warriors.”

Every believer is called to pray.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says: “If My people… will humble themselves and pray…”

Not politicians.
Not culture.
God’s people.

Because the hope for the world has never been found in systems alone, it has always been
connected to people who seek God.

The Church Carries Something the World Cannot Offer

There are many organizations that do good things.

People feed the hungry, care for the poor, and help those in need. Those things matter deeply.
But there is one thing that sets the church apart:

The presence and power of the Word of God.

Because when God’s Word is preached and prayed, lives change.

The Gospel brings:
● Healing
● Freedom
● Truth
● Salvation

And prayer creates space for God to move in those places.

We Need Bold Prayers Again

The message challenged us to move beyond passive, surface-layer prayer.

Not because God needs louder words, but because He desires hearts that seek Him
passionately and sincerely.

The church must once again become a people who pray with faith, urgency, and expectation.

Because when God finds people willing to stand in the gap, things can change.

Families can be restored.
Communities can experience revival.
People far from God can encounter salvation.

Prayer still matters.

And it still moves heaven.

Closing

In a world filled with division, fear, and brokenness, God is still asking the same question:

“Who will stand in the gap?”

Not who is perfect.
Not who has all the answers.
But who is willing.

And maybe the answer God is looking for… is you.
